  • How I Found my Dream Job as a Coach Working in an Aged Care Home: #mycoachstory

I will never forget the day I officially became a life coach.

I was sitting sitting on the edge of the bed next to a 90 something-year-old resident at the age care facility I work in as she despairingly told me how much she wished she had the courage to put a pillow over her mouth to stop herself from breathing and take her own life.

I remember feeling absolutely powerless in the moment as I recognise the deep pain she was expressing and how ill equipped I was at navigating a state of mind so haunted by one compelling all consuming thought.

That day I uncovered my highest purpose which is to make a difference where ever I am.

That day I signed up to be a life coach with The Coaching Institute, Australia.

After signing up and getting straight into trainings and triads, here are my top four tips for what coaching is and why I love the coaching experience!

1- You Have All The Answers!

What I love most about coaching is the premise that the client has all the answers to their problems within them because truly –

No one knows you like you know you!

    2- Right Here, Right Now!

In coaching, we always focus on the ‘here and now’ instead of the traditional talk therapy concept of rehashing the past. Nor do we fall for the “I’ll get to it one day” line of thinking- knowing full well that –

    Tomorrow never comes!

    3- But FIRST WHY!

Coaching is all about facilitating problem-solving and encouraging the client to improve their condition by shifting their thinking. How do we do this? We focus first on mindset! In coaching mindset is supreme. WHY we do what we do trumps how, when, where and with whom. If you’re not clear as to the basis of your thinking, the purpose behind it all, you will most likely end up somewhere you never wanted to be and wondered how you got there in the first place.

A coach can guide you to find the answer to your problem by guiding your line of thinking towards your solution based on the WHY behind it.

It’s like looking for a box in a room with no lights on. Fumbling in the dark you gingerly bump and feel your way around until someone points a flashlight to the right area of the room and there is the box you’ve been looking for.

4- Anyone Can Be A Coach But Your Coach Can’t Be Anyone!

Your coach has to have that special message that speaks to your Higher Self – you know, the one who knows that you are not happy at your job but too scared to rock the boat by leaving. Or the one who knows you shouldn’t be eating that unhealthy thing that hurts your tummy!

Your coach has to be someone who has been through what you’ve been through -yes coaches are human to!

The difference is we have the tools to overcome the problem you are going through.

Your coach has to be courageous enough to talk the talk AND walk the walk -living in alignment to your values is the key to personal success.

Your coach has to be committed to helping you grow and believes in you probably before you even believe in yourself – that’s just a special kind of people we are!

So in conclusion, I’ll ask you one little question:

Have you ever considered how much you can grow with the support and championing of a coach who’s in your corner.

Oh and by the way – my beautiful resident is doing just fine. She still has her down days but the difference now is I am confident that I can turn her thinking around to a much happier state of mind.
